Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Video & Projection Design for Musical Theatre

Diversionary Theatre presented a re-imaging of the iconic Hedwig and the Angry Inch on the 20th Anniversary of the rock musicalʼs off-Broadway premiere.

The video design realized a world in which Hedwig created all of their own content using found materials and analogue animation techniques including cut-and-paste construction, overhead projector transparencies, and jerky stop motion. The central song “The Origin of Love” is designed as a cut-and-paste stop motion animation constructed from found imagery culled from history, mythology, art, and queer iconography. It begins on a projection screen and slowly expands to overtake the entire theatre, transporting Hedwig from a presentational world into a fantastical dream space.
