A Pittsburgh Dérive
Dérives involve playful-constructive behavior and awareness of psychogeographical effects, and are thus quite different from the classic notions of journey or stroll.
Dérives are…an awareness of how different spaces draw you in or repel you.
PsychoGeography: “the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behavior of individuals.”… often political and critical of the status quo.
“Men can see nothing around them that is not their own image; everything speaks to them of themselves. Their very landscape is alive.” – Marx
“The virtual and the physical are absolutely coextensive, allowing a person to travel in one direction through sound or image while proceeding elsewhere physically.
It is the artist’s activity that brings a discursive landscape into visibility.
